Dr. Streiffer is the founding Chairman of and Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He was recruited to Tulane in 1998 to initiate the creation of the new Department, having had experience in most aspects of Family Medicine practice and education. In addition to duties as Department Chair and an active teaching role in the Family Medicine Clerkship, Dr. Streiffer maintains an active primary care practice at Tulane’s Uptown Square (University Square) facility. He has been active for most of his career in obstetrics, holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics, and has special interests in patient education, behavior change, herbal medicine and rural health workforce issues. He has been the recipient of teaching awards from residents and students, and has been active in leadership roles in the American and Louisiana Academies of Family Physicians as well as the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Dr. Streiffer is also certified as a mohel by the Berit Mila Board of Reform Judaism and has served many families in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and surrounding communities in the capacity of moyel.

Dr. Streiffer, a native of New Orleans, received a BS Cum Laude in Mathematics from Tulane where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an MD from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans where he was elected to AOA Honor Medical Society. He completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, following which he entered private practice in rural Mississippi. It was there that his teaching career began as a preceptor for the University of Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Clerkship. Later, he joined the full time Faculty in Jackson, Mississippi for several years before relocating to Denver, CO, where he served as Director of the Mercy Family Medicine Residency (later known as the St. Anthony’s program). In 1990, he returned to Louisiana to become the director of Predoctoral Education in Family Medicine at LSU School of Medicine, and led the process to start a required Family Medicine Clerkship. He was recruited to Baton Rouge in 1993 where he was the founding director of the State’s first community hospital-based Family Medicine residency at the Baton Rouge General, until coming to Tulane in 1998. Rick and Ann have 3 kids, 1 grandson, 2 dogs and a cat, and a love of chocolate, and are active in a variety of community activities.
