University of New Mexico: Albuquerque, New Mexico
If you like the West with its desert-like qualities, beautiful mountains, and good skiing and hiking close by then you will love this city. There are good sport teams and lots to do in this fairly big city. There are not a whole lot of trees and the climate is very dry however beautiful.
The first year is pretty similar to all other programs and thus is very good. They look for people interested in working with the underserved and preferably who want to stay in NM. You don't have to speak Spanish though it is a good opportunity to learn or improve.
They have a very good international connection in that the previous chairman and still faculty member travels around the world setting up FP programs.
The thing that is different about this program is that it requires a lot of motivation to get the most out of your experience. The last two years are pretty much unstructured and so you may learn a lot of hard work or you may very well slack and get by without learning a lot (which is great for those who love to hike and ski etc…)
There are also tons of Indian reservations where you can get moonlight, you get excellent experience, almost total responsibility, and you can make quite a bit of money.
The residents were nice and for the most part seemed happy, no dinner the night before so you don't get to know them that well.
